Bringing Fishermen Together from All Over Brazil
Fisgou is a social network for fishing enthusiasts across Brazil. It makes fishing more interactive and fun by letting users log catches, discover spots, and connect with a passionate community.
Context
Some numbers for context
+6 million
Recreational fisherman in Brazil
+1 million
Professional fisherman in Brazil
USD 180 million /year
is generated in Brazilian economy by recreational fishing
This figure highlights the sector’s growth potential when compared to other countries such as Germany (USD 8.2 billion), the United Kingdom (USD 6.2 billion), and the United States (USD 24 billion).
Process
User Research & Personas
Listening to the people who live the experience
Through extensive interviews with both professional and recreational fishermen, we identified key user profiles and mapped out their main pain points. This research provided a holistic understanding of their goals, motivations, and varying levels of competitiveness — helping to define a clear, structured problem that would later be translated into actionable design goals.
What we discovered

The Problem
Many fishermen rely on memory or scattered notes to track catches, making it hard to improve or compare results over time. There's also a lack of accessible, local knowledge on species, bait, and conditions. While many seek deeper community connection, traditional social media doesn’t meet their specific needs.
Overall, the fishing community lacks tailored digital tools that support their routines, goals, and culture — revealing a strong opportunity for innovation.
Design Goals
Enable easy and structured catch tracking
Design an intuitive and organized way for users to log their catches, allowing them to review, analyze, and learn from their fishing history over time.
Deliver species-specific fishing intelligence
Provide a rich, easy-to-navigate database with localized and relevant information about fish species — including ideal bait, behavior, seasonal patterns, and environmental conditions.
Gamify the fishing experience
Introduce achievement systems and collection mechanics to make fishing more engaging, rewarding, and goal-driven — turning each trip into a memorable experience.
Foster a strong and engaging fishing community
Build an integrated social space tailored to fishermen, enabling them to connect, share experiences, and gain recognition within a like-minded network.
Brand Design
Crafting an Identity that speaks their language
The client had already chosen the name Fisgou—a clever and catchy term in Portuguese that means "hooked." They also brought an initial logo concept featuring a fisherman catching a fish. While the idea captured the sport's spirit, the challenge was to evolve it into a more minimal, versatile, and modern identity—digital-first, but still connected to the Brazilian fishing culture.
Fisgou is a brand meticulously crafted to resonate with the essence of the Brazilian fisherman — blending authenticity, functionality, and a deep understanding of the local fishing culture. From visual identity to brand voice, every element reflects the spirit of adventure, connection to nature, and passion that define sport and professional fishing in Brazil. By aligning with the values, habits, and aspirations of its audience, FISGOU successfully meets all the initial goals: establishing a strong market presence, fostering community engagement, and positioning itself as a trusted companion for those who live the fishing lifestyle.
Information Architecture
Mapping the Experience
To make the app intuitive for both beginners and experienced fishermen, I organized the content around familiar patterns inspired by apps they mentioned during interviews. This structure served as the backbone for the Information Architecture of the project.
Wireframes & Validation
Sketching Ideas, Testing Assumptions
Wireframes allowed us to validate ideas early, reducing risk and saving time. We interviewed 10 users and gave them specific tasks to complete, helping us uncover usability issues and refine the experience before moving into high-fidelity design.
Improvement proposals
Based on the tests, I´ve come up with new improvement proposals for the app.
Move sorting options to the top and pair icons with labels for better clarity.
Start the flow with species selection to match user expectations.
Group fields into steps to simplify the capture registration process.
High-Fidelity Prototype
Bringing the product to life
After testing and validation, Fisgou was brought to life with a clean, intuitive interface centered around community, content, and personal fishing records.

Starter
As a new fishing enthusiast, I would like a place where I can interact with the community, discover new fishing spots, and learn more about this universe in a fun and guided way.
Community Feed → Ask, share & get tips
Interactive Map → Beginner-friendly fishing spots
Species Catalog → Visual guide to species

Experienced
As someone who has been fishing for a while, I want a tool that helps me track my catches, improve my techniques, and connect with other anglers who share the same passion.
Capture Logbook → Track catches with full details
Custom Tags & Notes → Personal insights & gear tracking
Community Feed → Connect with all-level anglers

Elite
As a competitive fisherman, I need a platform where I can analyze my performance, track my fishing goals, and access advanced data on species and conditions to stay ahead in every challenge.
Analytics Dashboard → Catch trends & species insights
Performance Comparison → Track progress & rank with others

Despite the complexity of designing for three distinct user profiles, the project successfully delivered a clear, scalable, and intuitive product experience tailored to the needs of Brazil’s fishing community.
Challenges for this project:
User Lock-in and Market Expectations:
Fishbrain, a leading global fishing app with strong presence in the U.S., sets a benchmark for digital fishing experiences. Although it is not widely adopted in Brazil, it still influences user expectations in terms of features and usability. While FISGOU offers a unique experience, attracting users who are already familiar with or loyal to other platforms presents a challenge in terms migration.
Varying Fishing Data and Regional Differences:
Fishing practices may vary widely by region — from the names used for each species, to preferred gear, bait types, and local fishing techniques. Even the appearance and behavior of the same fish species can shift based on seasonal and geographic factors. Designing a system that accounts for these nuances posed a challenge in terms of content accuracy and scalability.
Next Steps for this project:
Creating an achievements system that is both accessible for beginners and engaging for experts, reinforcing long-term retention through reward and progression.
Explore opportunities for integration with real-time weather, GPS, and regional fishing data sources.
Potential of creating a dynamic fishing mode for real-time activity tracking turning the user experience more immersive and useful.
